In the evolving landscape of architectural design, a groundbreaking approach is setting the stage for a revolution: three-dimensional modeling within augmented reality (AR). This innovative method enables architects to create or modify virtual content that is perfectly aligned with the real world, offering an unprecedented level of precision and flexibility in design.

Our latest development introduces a novel technique for AR modeling in environments with undetermined geometry. Utilizing point marking strategies, architects can now accurately position and integrate features of the surrounding real world—such as buildings and pathways—into their virtual designs. This advancement not only enhances the utility of these features but also streamlines the modeling process, particularly over empty terrains where understanding the context of surrounding structures is crucial.

A standout application of this technology is its application in the architectural domain, specifically for crafting massing models on-site. Massing models, which outline a building's basic size and placement, are now being designed in-situ, allowing architects to directly engage with the environment and adjust their designs in real-time. This hands-on approach fosters a deeper understanding of how a building will integrate with its surroundings, ensuring a harmonious relationship between the new structure and the existing landscape.

Through rigorous user studies, our approach has been validated as a viable solution for in-situ mass modeling. We also explored the effectiveness of various point marking techniques and the role of perception in line alignment. Findings suggest that while lower precision marking and perceptual alignment may affect model accuracy and application usability, they remain integral to the practical application of AR in architectural design.

As we continue to refine our tools and techniques, the potential for AR in architecture promises not only to enhance the design process but also to inspire innovative solutions to complex challenges. By bridging the gap between virtual planning and real-world execution, AR is paving the way for a new era in architectural creativity and efficiency.
